A Motion Designer’s Portrait

As entrepreneurs we make decisions in which direction our business is going. The paths might change throughout our careers, but often we know the destination. I have known early on, that I wanted to be a motion designer. My mission, however, has only become clear, since I started my freelance business.

I have had an influx of newcomers joining my audience, so I thought I’d take the time to introduce myself.

About me

Hi, I’m Sonja. I’m a Motion Designer and Video Editor (among the list of my multi-hyphenates). I take pride in my work. I like planning details, perfecting my designs and making sure everything moves just right. Not only do I add a personal touch to my own brand and services, but more importantly, I help my clients personalise theirs.

My Mission

My mission is to help female-owned design businesses to stand out with their branding by adding quirky animation to their identity that humanises their brand and connects to their audiences. However, I also work with clients from diverse backgrounds and industries.

Some of my other clients include designers and lettering artists such as Stefan Kunz and Lauren Hom, consumer product brands such as the German soft drink company fritz-kola and NGOs such as the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. I also like to spend my time on pro-bono projects, like my collaboration with content creator Andy (rot169).

It’s so pleasing to see my idea get turned into something so beautiful and that helps portray quite a challenging topic to people who are new to cyber security. I love how much detail and passion Sonja puts into her work.

My Passion

My career began in 2008 and during that time, I have discovered that breaking down complex topics to digestible formats is where I thrive. I love telling stories. I have dedicated my career to producing explainer videos, edutainment content and short form media to teach, entertain and help tell stories. Aside from design and business, my passions lie in neuroscience, mental health and sustainability. I like learning about these fields and helping others visualise them.

Perhaps, I love telling stories, because I am a philomath myself. A lover of learning. I strive to educate myself on a daily basis. Teaching others, is the best way for me to learn and improve. My client work fuels my studies to develop my craft, which I channel into teaching others. Discovering new methods and enthusing animation students to try them, brings me joy.

Plans for the future

As I continue to grow as a designer and animator, I will do my best to lead by example by empowering women, supporting women-owned businesses and helping entrepreneurs achieve their business goals. I endeavor to share my story and contribute my experiences, so that others can learn from them.
